NaNo, BlogFest, and Work Stations, Oh My!

Just a quick update (in way of procrastination) today.  I went to my regional NaNo meet & greet last night.  I met a ton of cool people, that are just as crazy as I am.

I got to meet my bloggy-friend, Amanda from The Zen Leaf.  We've been following each other for a few months now and never realized we live in the same town. I guess the internet isn't as big as I thought it was.

I feel a little recharged on getting my abbreviated Snowflake done on A Window to the Gift after meeting everybody.  I'm looking forward to having a face-to-face group to help keep me going.

Oh, and I found out that the cute little guy to your left has been dubbed "The Guilt Monkey." I have a feeling he will be my constant companion on this trip.

If you haven't heard about it (in reality, you're probably getting sick of hearing about it), I'm hosting the second Small Packages Blogfest on November 16th.  I'm looking for blogs with 300 or fewer followers.  Check out the link for the suggestions, topic, and Mr. Linky.

Please spread the word!  We had nine actively participate last month, so I'm looking to have at least 10 this month.  The topic's pretty awesome, thanks to the husband.

After the Meet & Greet last night, I finally got around to doing something I've been meaning to do for months. I finally set up a work station that's all mine and away from distractions (well mostly, except for you, O Interwebs!).

Here it is, complete with Tums for when the stress gets too much, an extra monitor to display my research as I type, and my Maleficent picture (the greatest of all Disney villains).

I've also updated the desktop:

This is a great collage of the 11 doctors from Doctor Who.  It's done by a great artist, renton1313 on Deviant Art.  All of her artwork has the same paper collage effect, and she has some beautiful prints for sale. (hint, hint, oh husband, dear: I especially like The Aviatrix).

Anyway, I'm hoping that having a workspace of my own that isn't also used as something else (I used to work in the living room), will help me get more in a writing frame of mind.  I've been struggling with feeling like a "real" writer, I think in part because it was so easy to just look at my writing as a hobby.

Maybe having a work area will help with that.

Good luck all of my fellow NaNo-ers.

Yikes, Tums for the stress? You aren't selling NaNoWriMo to me very well.

It was great to meet you last night! Our meet & greet was so tame compared to last year, where we literally had like 35 people show up! I liked the more intimate atmosphere this time. There were what? 12 or 13 of us? It was cozy and we could all hear each other speak! :D

For some reason your desk looks very familiar. I can't figure out if I had one just like it when we lived in Wisconsin (we didn't bring most of our furnature with us) or if it's because the cut of the drawers and the handles look just like the chest-of-drawers my sister and I grew up with (and which is now installed in my sons' bedroom). Weird.

@Allison-I have a notoriously nervous stomach. Yeah for genetics!

@Amanda-It was a really fun group! The desk is actually my husband's first desk. He's had it for going on 15 years, so it's of the same generation as your chest-of-drawers.

Actually I've had it 20 years. I got that desk for my 9th birthday. It's been rock solid this whole time. Also, that's the desk I was sitting at when I tricked my dear wife into being my girlfriend. Poor sucker never saw me coming.

Good luck with your NaNo. I'm doing it as well. I haven't gone to my region's meet n greet...after reading what you said about it I'm thinking maybe I should.

Joo can doo eet! I've got 10 students signed up so far, and others in my English classes are expressing interest in NaNo. I'm looking forward too seeing what y'all are able to accomplish.

@Alex-Thanks! I try to keep that in mind, but it does slip from time to time.

@Lynda-I really can't suggest it enough. It's so nice to be able to talk about NaNo with people face to face. It's also a big hint on the forums to get involved, the support keeps you going.

@Milo-That's so exciting! I wish I had known about NaNo when I was still teaching. I bet it's a great extension for those more creative students.

Wish I lived closer to my nano friends, but I'm in the "Elsewhere in Idaho" group. Getting geared up. Mostly thinking at this point.

KK, I was in the same situation for Script Frenzy. Just make sure that you get really involved with the forums. Not quite as good as face-to-face, but it's a good way to stay motivated.

So cool you got to meet a fellow blogger! It's funny how 'small' the blogosphere really is, lol

And you just reminded me that I need to seriously clean off my desk before Monday rolls around. No distractions!
