Geeky Girl Tuesday: Geek up your Halloween

The Halloween season is officially upon us (regardless of the tempting candy isle being around for about a month).

If you're like me, trick or treating is too much work when you can stop down said isle and treat yourself whenever you want.  So instead of costume ideas or things like that, I'm going to recommend some movies to turn to when the sugar crash hits.

Beetlejuice
Ahh, the 80s.  When Tim Burton's style was still new and refreshing and Michael Keaton was still making movies.  A fun movie, with what is undoubtedly the best random musical number ever.



Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
A classic that is only fun if you can fully embrace the camp of an aging Bette Davis AND Joan Crawford.  Now that I come to think of it, a Davis & Crawford themed party would be awesome!  Prepare yourself for unabashed drama and scenery-chewing that could only be handled by these two.


 
Anything with Vincent Price
No really, anything with him.  He is the high grand master of Halloween in my mind.  Fun, cheap scares, and one of the best voices of any actor.

Small Packages--Inaugural Post!

If you've even glanced at my blog the last few weeks, you're probably sick of hearing about my Small Packages blogfest.  Well, good news: Today is post day! 

I want to sincerely thank everyone taking part and everyone that has helped promote the blogfest in one way or another.

I'm sure that you're tired of my blabbing by now and want me to get on to the Halloween-y good fun.

For this month's post, I got a little nostalgic.  The Husband and I had been reminiscing about when TV actually had holiday themed shows.  You know, back before the three month holiday hiatus and we all got to cynical to have a straight-forward Valentine's day show.

So, for my post I wanted to write about my favorite Halloween special of all time.

Yes, I am that sappy.  Just like the fact that it's not Christmas until I see little Linus up on that stage, it's not Halloween until Charlie Brown gets his rock and Snoopy daydreams of the Flying Ace. 

I think one of the reasons I love the special so much is because it represents a missing part of my childhood.  I never got to go trick or treating, or visit a pumpkin patch, or have a dancing dog. 

My prime trick-or-treating years were spent in the middle of nowhere in North East Texas.  I did have a neighbors close by, but they were all old, and I don't think they believed in celebrating Halloween.  But other than the neighbors down the road, you'd have to drive ten minutes to get into town where there were actual neighborhoods.

This was all before the popularity of church "Fall Festivals," so I didn't have that as an outlet either.  (But I was one of only a handful of kids at my church anyway). So every year, I'd watch Charlie Brown get another rock but still keep trying. See wise beyond his years Linus struggle with faith and belief.  And witness the power of Snoopy's imagination.

I think my memories of being on the couch with a bag of candy all my own and the warmth of Charlie Brown isn't that bad a trade-off after all.

Starting Out Small--Small Packages Blogfest

Recently most of my blogging has been involved in one or another blog rings, fests, or memes.  For someone like me, that often times struggles a bit for writing topics, it's been very helpful.  I thought I'd start one of my own, one based around smaller blogs. 


There's a lot of emphasis out there on building follower numbers.  We all want to reach a few more people, but a lot of times we forget that sometimes quality is better than quantity.

This blogfest is built around the idea of slowly building numbers of loyal followers that are actually that: followers.  More than just a notch in a cyber-belt, but people who will read and comment on each other's blogs.

The rules of the blogfest are simple:

1. Don't talk about the blogfest.  Sorry, I couldn't help myself.  In actuality, please let others know.  Use the button, subscribe to the Mr. Linky, Facebook, Twitter, the works.  
2. You must have 150 followers or less on your first go around.
3. Post on the given topic on the given date, and give a link to the original post, so everyone can see the list of bloggers contributing.
4. Follow at least one new blogger.
5. Make at least three comments on other blogs.
