Top Ten Horror/Sci-Fi Movie Quotes Blogfest

I came across this fun blogfest through Alex J. Cavanaugh.  Some really cool guys, iZombieLover and Ellie Garratt came up with the topic.  The top ten horror/sci-fi movie quotes. 

In all honesty, I haven't thought about this much since I signed up for it a while back, and now I'm a bit worried that I'll come up with enough.  Let's see how it goes:

Shaun of the Dead
Liz: It's just with Ed here, it's no wonder I always bring my flat-mates out and then that only exacerbates things.
Shaun: What do you mean?
Liz: Well you guys hardly get on, do you?
Shaun: No, what does "exacerbate" mean?
Liz: It means um, to make things worse.

Great zombie rom-com.  The first, the best, and an instant classic.

Let the Right One In
Oskar: How old are you?
Eli: Twelve... more or less.


A haunting movie, up for lots of slightly different interpretations.  As much about society's outcasts as it is a vampire movie.  For a really intense ride, try out the book (which has one of the scariest scenes I've ever read).

A Tale of Two Sisters
Eun-ju: Do know what's really scary? You want to forget something. Totally wipe it off your mind. But you never can. It can't go away, you see. And... and it follows you around like a ghost.

A beautiful and complicated film that does well under repeated viewing. Stick with the movie through the deliberately slow pacing, and feel the hairs on your arms stand up as the tension mounts.

Psycho
Norman Bates: It's not like my mother is a maniac or a raving thing. She just goes a little mad sometimes. We all go a little mad sometimes.

By now, most people know the twist of this film even if they haven't seen it.  But it's still worth watching for the absolutely amazing job by Anthony Perkins.  It's no wonder he got type cast after this movie, the above line still gives me chills.

Audition
Asami Yamazaki: Kiri kiri kiri kiri kiri kiri!

This quote will mean nothing to you if you haven't watched this movie.  If you have, you're probably shivering now.  Another complex and confusing Asian horror that will haunt you for years to come.

Serenity
Jayne Cobb: She is startin' to damage my calm.

Unless your big fans of the series, this movie is just so-so.  But, it was great to see the story come to a conclusion (of sorts) and to see the characters' send off.

PS-Jayne's my favorite.

The Shining
Grady daughters: Come play with us, Danny.

The movie that single-handedly made me terrified of small British children. A great horror classic, even if King hated it and it really has nothing to do with the novel.

The Jacket
Jack Starks: I was 27 years old the first time I died.

A movie that didn't do well in the theaters and hasn't really gotten the notice it deserves.  A great time-travel, medical experimentation movie that manages to keep you intrigued and interested in the characters.  The first film I saw Adrien Brody in, and in my mind, still one of his best.

Being John Malkovich
John Malkovich: This portal is mine and must be sealed up forever. For the love of God.
Craig Schwartz: With all respect, sir, I discovered that portal. Its my livelihood.
John Malkovich: It's my head, Schwartz, and I'll see you in court!
Craig Schwartz: And who's to say I won't be seeing what you're seeing... in court? 

A bizarre, but brilliant film that will make you love/appreciate John Malkovich even more.

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?
Blanche: You wouldn't be able to do these awful things to me if I weren't still in this chair.
Jane: But you are, Blanche! You are in that chair!

A great dark comedy thriller that stars two Hollywood classics at the end of their career.  Not one to miss, but be sure you can embrace the camp.

Updates and Why I love David Bowie

Just a couple of quick updates before I totally geek out on you today.

First:

I've reached the halfway point with NaNo!  I'm really excited as this is the most (by 150%) I've ever written on anything.  I've actually gone beyond my personal goal I've set, and I think I might even be able to win!  Three words on how I've done it:

Planning, planning, planning.

In honor of Thanksgiving, and the beginning of a long line of colonists screwing over Native Americans, post about a time that you took advantage of someone. Or if you don't want to be that revealing about your darker side, write about a time that someone took advantage of you.

I love this man.

And this weekend, I got to relive exactly what made me fall in love with David Bowie in the first place.  Our local Geek Mecca had a sing/quote a long screening of Labyrinth.  I'm young enough that I never actually got to see it in the theaters, so it was a special treat.

So here are the top five reasons I love David Bowie and Labyrinth:

1. David Bowie was my first crush.  Really, re-watch the movie, he's pretty much liquid sex through the whole thing.

You thought I was joking, huh?

2. The music.  Most of the music is pretty corny, but it's fun.  There are some genuinely good songs though. "As the World Falls Down" and "Within You" are Classic creepy/sexy/sweet/dark Bowie at his best.



3. Jim Henson's puppets. Anything Jim Henson touched during his lifetime is gold to me.  Give me a creepy puppet any day over a slickly done CGI creature. It doesn't matter how real it looks, Avatar is still just pixels to me.  Ludo is really there.

4. Sara as a Mary Jane.  Yeah, looking back, she's lost a lot of the luster she had for me, and she's a whiny spoiled brat, but when I first saw Labyrinth I was a whiny spoiled brat.  I loved to play dress up and pretend, I thought life wasn't fair, and I was a brunette, too.  Sara was the perfect placeholder for me.

5. I would say something touching here about how the movie reminds me of simpler times, a happy childhood, etc. etc. But I'll be honest.  I love it because it's over the top, campy, pretty terribly acted, and has great 80s music.  It's the movie equivalent to a huge slice of cake: terrible for you, but loads of fun.

Gearing up for the Blogfest!

I've been "out of the office" so to speak for a bit now, but I wanted to do a quick update to remind everybody (and hopefully get some more people interested) about the Small Packages blogfest.

It's designed specifically with smaller bloggers in mind. People like me that have 150 followers or less.  I personally know that blogfests are a good way to boost readership and followers, but I feel that sometimes the larger ones are a bit overwhelming. 

So with this in mind, I thought that with a base of bloggers that have fewer followers, we could keep it managable and maybe make some new blogger friends. 

Since it's October, the theme for this month is your favorite Halloween themed TV show or scary movie. 

A few simple "rules:"
1. You must have 150 followers or less on your first go around.
2. Post on the given topic on the given date, and give a link to the Small Packages  info page, so everyone can see the list of bloggers contributing.
3. Follow at least one new blogger.
4. Make at least three comments on other blogs.

Please spread the word among all of your blogging friends.  So far we have 8 signed up which I think is pretty good, but I'd like to see if we could get just a few more.

Starting Out Small--Small Packages Blogfest

Recently most of my blogging has been involved in one or another blog rings, fests, or memes.  For someone like me, that often times struggles a bit for writing topics, it's been very helpful.  I thought I'd start one of my own, one based around smaller blogs. 


There's a lot of emphasis out there on building follower numbers.  We all want to reach a few more people, but a lot of times we forget that sometimes quality is better than quantity.

This blogfest is built around the idea of slowly building numbers of loyal followers that are actually that: followers.  More than just a notch in a cyber-belt, but people who will read and comment on each other's blogs.

The rules of the blogfest are simple:

1. Don't talk about the blogfest.  Sorry, I couldn't help myself.  In actuality, please let others know.  Use the button, subscribe to the Mr. Linky, Facebook, Twitter, the works.  
2. You must have 150 followers or less on your first go around.
3. Post on the given topic on the given date, and give a link to the original post, so everyone can see the list of bloggers contributing.
4. Follow at least one new blogger.
5. Make at least three comments on other blogs.
